It’s International Women’s Day! This is a day where everyone can celebrate all the amazing women in their lives, and the women that have shaped society, for all the incredible things they have done. This year, we asked all the guys amongst you to nominate the women that have supported you, cared for you and inspired you.

“My foster mother. She helped me so much in my life and always inspires me to be the best I can be”

“My nan. She has always been incredible role model for my sisters and really took care of us when we were young”

“My mum is an incredible woman. She’s raised four kids, held down three jobs to put me through college and is still as fun-loving as ever”

“My pet dog Daisy! It sounds crazy, but she has helped me through a lot!”

“My niece. She’s only two, but she is already strong badass woman!”

“My bestie is amazing. She’s always been there, and never fails to listen to or support me.”

“My sister. She has really been through it lately and she deserves to be celebrated”

“My baby sister is such an amazing person to be around – I’ll protect her forever.”

“My mom. I cannot get over how much she has sacrificed to make me and the family happy”

And one final word, from our awesome ambassador Max Hovey…

Why is international Women’s Day important to you?

Growing up as a gay man was bloody hard, and putting it bluntly women got me through it. I was accepted without judgement and given unwavering support. They fought my corner when I faced homophobia, and helped me to come to terms with my sexuality. Women have been my safety blanket, and have always made me feel so loved and accepted. Seeing women be so supportive of each other and accepting of those different to them in society is to me, the driving force for social change today.

Who do you want to empower this International Women’s Day?

My mum, hands down. My mum is honestly my hero, and I don’t recognise that enough. She has dedicated the last 30 years to single handedly raising me and my two brothers, holding down as many jobs and hours as possible to ensure we had the BEST upbringing. I am truly so grateful for the strength and courage she has shown, with all she has been through, she is a true angel.

Why is International Women’s Day important to society?

Women are fighting battles everyday, that not necessarily everyone sees. Societal gender stereotypes, expectations of conformity, sexism, harassment, and so many more. Woman have fought so hard for their rights, just as the LGBTQ+ community, and those fighting for racial equality – all of which should be equally celebrated. A lot of people ask “why do woman need a day dedicated to them?”, it’s a day to celebrate the strength and courage of those brave enough to fight for equality every day, and to recognise that there is still work to be done.
