Today we launch our brand new report, The Valentine Study; an in depth look at the changing landscape of sexuality and relationships in the digital age.
Although we have recently seen a significant increase in discourse surrounding sexuality, and things are definitely moving in the right direction in terms of equal rights for those whose sexual identity does not fall within heteronormative confines, our research still consistently finds a strong link between those who identify as LGBT+ and experiences of bullying. For this reason we felt it was important to release this research to coincide with a day that has historically, promoted and celebrated heteronormative relationships, often excluding the romantic narratives of the LGBT+ community.
This report examines how young people are choosing to define their sexuality in 2017, if labels of sexuality are still relevant or whether there has been a move towards a new, fluid construct that looks beyond the traditional labels people have previously used to identify themselves. We also explore what role the Internet has played in the development of sexual identity, the rising popularity of virtual relationships and whether online anonymity can be used as a tool for self-discovery.
We hope this report goes some way in reassuring young people that there is no right or wrong when it comes to identifying where you sit on the sexuality spectrum and indeed the exploration of your sexual identity is something that is completely normal.
