Most people will experience a breakup or two in their dating life. Whether you’re the dumper or the dumpee, you’re gonna go through about a hundred emotions during a break up which can be intense and far-ranging.

Since everyone is different and people cope with things in various weird and wonderful ways, we can’t really tell you how to deal with every single situation. We can, however, tell you some definite don’ts when it comes to getting over it and moving on…

Don’t give up all hope

If your partner broke up with you unexpectedly, this can be the heart-wrenching thing ever. At the time, it will seem like your whole world is about to implode. But whatever you do, don’t give up! Chances are, the initial pain will wear off in time and you’ll be right as rain.

So, before you go boarding up your windows and adopting 30 cats, remember that you are an independent person who doesn’t need to rely on someone else for happiness and stability.

Don’t go public

Don’t take to the internet and write defamatory statuses about your ex!!! Even if what you want to say is all true, it’s really not worth it. Be the bigger person and keep your social feeds free of explicit descriptions of your ex… (don’t be Like Alex 😂)

Don’t bottle it up

We are all entitled to a bit of mope time post-break-up and chances are, you’ll have someone who’s willing to talk it out with you, whether it’s your BFF, mate, family member or sibling. You can always talk to us at Ditch the Label too, just click here to join our community!

It’s ok to be sad and it’s ok to cry. You are not a robot, breakups hurt!

Don’t rebound

It’s not the best thing to go on the hunt for a rebound. Make sure you give yourself time to recover before you ‘jump back on the horse’. You deserve some ‘you time,’ so before you reactivate your Tinder account, spend some time just chilling, enjoying your own company and live the single life. Catch up with some mates you haven’t seen in a while and watch all those movies that your ex never wanted to watch!

Don’t hide

Don’t become a recluse. In fact, do the exact opposite of that.

Be sure to go out and enjoy yourself. It’s ok to stay home and mope on the sofa from time to time but try not to make a habit of it! Excessive moping is no good for confidence and can lead to more serious things like depression.

Make sure you surround yourself with positive people and friends who care! Laughter really is the best medicine.

Don’t talk to them for a while

Being friends with our exes is a nice idea but it’s not very realistic. It can also be really painful especially if people move on at different paces. We’re not saying you should never speak to them again, but definitely put a bit of distance between yourselves. If you speak to them every day, it’s going make moving on a lot harder.

Don’t snoop

Whatever you do, don’t trawl their social feeds for hints as to what they’ve been doing and who they’re hanging out with. It’s a bit stalkerish and really, it’s an invasion of their privacy.

Don’t eat your feelings (too much)

So, when you are having a mopey day, sitting on the sofa and eating a box of Maltesers is sometimes the only thing that will cheer you up, and that’s fine. Just make sure its all in moderation! Two litres of cookie dough ice-cream every night ain’t so good!

Exercise is also a really good way to get rid of stress and it makes us feel good to boot- try it out!

Don’t make the same mistakes

When things don’t work out, make an effort to always try to learn from your past endeavours. Try to put a positive spin on a bad break up by learning from experience and have a read of this article on rejection for tips to help you come to terms with the change in your life.

Definitely don’t

Post their nude pics on the internet. This is called Revenge Porn and it is illegal. No matter how much they hurt you, no one deserves to be exposed online. Find out more here: What is Revenge Porn? 5 things You Should Know from the Experts.

So, there you have it. 10 don’ts that will hopefully help to make your break up a lil’ easier.

No matter how hard it seems, you will get through it and remember that if you need to talk, join the DTL community where you can get advice from a DTL digital mentor or talk it out with others – we want to hear from you!
