Lucy Moon has some much needed wisdom to share about her first day at school. Check out Lucy’s letter to her 11 year old self:
Dear Lucy,
You’re eleven years old. It’s September 4th. Last week you walked the route to school with your mum to make sure you knew the two miles that you would be taking twice a day, every day, for the next seven years. Four days ago, you hurriedly bought a new pencil case and PE kit – entirely school standard, you’ve yet to learn that they always fit two sizes bigger than the label suggests. Two days ago, you finished the work your head of year set you when you found out you had a place at your local grammar school. Today is the day school begins.
Yes, it’s going to be just as intimidating as you’d expect to walk into a room of thirty girls and introduce yourself. Yes, you will be consistently reminded for the next three years of the fun fact you will share in the introductory session about your love of flying pigs. No, eleven years on I still don’t understand where that came from. Despite this initial hurdle, the fear will subside and you’ll get used to the new corridors, new lessons and new teachers that will come to define your experience at school. It will be the start of a new period of your life, where you’ll grow, learn new things about yourself, make new friends and try new things. You have so much to look forward to! Although Year Seven provided some teething issues (literally – I’m so sorry about those retainers,) Year Eight is disco heaven and Year Ten gives you six hours a week of lessons you love and some of the friends you’re still close to today. Sometimes it’s tough, but you don’t grow unless you’re being challenged and I promise everything you go through will be beneficial in the long run.
I wish I could give you the advice I received much later on; stand up for yourself and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone when necessary. You tend to do what you’re told and shy away from confrontation but I promise that you will be so much better in the long run if you follow your instincts and don’t let people walk over you. People pleasing, whether it’s teachers, parents or friends, leaves your own wishes as the lowest priority. Prioritise yourself and you’ll get where you want to be.
Good luck! I’m sure you’ll be amazing. ❤️
Sincerely,
Lucy x
