How to Make Britain ‘Great’ Again
The votes have been counted and the decision has been made. The United Kingdom is to leave the EU.
This result has led to uncertain times for foreigners in the UK; people are looking for reassurance that their fundamental human rights to safety, equality and dignity will be protected in a UK that exists outside of the EU. Regardless of whether you chose ‘in’ or ‘out’, it cannot go unnoticed that many have used the referendum as a platform and an opportunity to speak hatefully about non-British born citizens living in the UK.
Hardly surprising when certain politicians are almost poster boys for a campaign which has stoked fears around ‘immigration’ – you only have to look at social media and the widely reported horrific incident in Manchester to see the ignorant vitriol spouted by many; racism, which has been thinly-veiled as ‘patriotism’.
Some people have even gone as far as saying those with “non-white skin should go home” after the vote was counted. Often these vile opinions (because of their tone) draw more attention and gain wider circulation than those who stand for equality, and encourage diversity.
Enough is enough.
Here at DTL it is our mission to counteract these hateful messages, which are only born out of misinformation, and we invite you to do the same. Let the voice of peace be heard above any other. Let those that are filled with hate, learn from those that love, and let us continue fighting for what is right.
We implore you not to let recent political events tear us apart. Right now, more than ever, we need to stand together, as one united community. We are stronger together. We need to remember that segregation and peace are mutually exclusive – if we are striving for a better world, then we need to come together as one world nation because divided, we will inevitably fall. Let’s unlearn engrained phobias and welcome one another into our countries, cities and homes with open arms.
If you want to make Britain ‘great’ again, accept your neighbour for who they are; regardless of race, religion, sexuality, gender, age or income. Yes, we are all different but isn’t that what makes the world so interesting?
Ditch the Label stand with you and welcome you, whoever you may be.
